3 am
the clock read, I was wide awake. It was pitch black in my room
the only light was from my digital clock. Usually this was a warm orange
flame colour, but today it was different, it seemed duller, sort of
yellowy like a cats eye, possibly an old siamese cat. I tried to get
back to sleep but the glow from the clock kept me awake, 4am came and
went, then 6am, surely it should be light soon. 7am arrived, this should
have been the time that my alarm was set for, but nothing happened and
it was still pitch black. I started to worry, so I got out of bed and
looked out of the window.
Outside seemed foggy, but still dark, I couldnt
see anything through the window, just a swirling mist hovering outside
in the blackness. Something was wrong, but what it was, I couldnt tell.
I
tried to turn the light on but it was dead, so I went downstairs, no
lights were working anywhere in the house, now I was really worried,
especially by the fact that not a sound could be heard anywhere. I tried
the phone but all I heard was the engaged tone, at least it gave me
comfort to think that something was working. I tried the TV but all
that I received was snow on the screen and a cackling noise from the
speaker, what is wrong.
I
looked out of the windows downstairs only to be met by the same scene
a swirling mist just viewable in the blackness.
By this time I was really scared, I ran upstairs and got dressed, and
still the silence prevailed, it was as if there was a presence that
had sucked in all the sounds, smells and feelings of my home. I ran down
stairs and tried to open the front door. To my horror the door was solid,
no movement whatsoever, just as though someone had cemented the door
together. It was if the house was keeping me prisoner, I tried to keep
calm, the only way out was to throw something at the window and to climb
out.
I picked up the nearest thing to me, which was a speaker from the stereo,
it was quite weighty, and I threw it at the window with all my strength,
only to see it bounce off and fall to the floor. ..........Was the house
keeping me prisoner.
It was then that I heard something, a noise that at first was only just
audible.....tap, tap, tap it appeared to be coming from the loft, very
quite at first but slowly becoming louder and louder, until it became
a violent banging, like an axe on a wooden log. I crept up the stairs
to the landing and the sound was getting louder and more violent, my
heart was thumping, dare I go up the final stairs to the loft.
As I slowly climbed the steep stairs up into the loft, I noticed a sweet
scented smell, that got sweeter and sweeter as I aproached the top stair,
the smell got so overpowering and sickly. as I climed the stairs, further,
the banging stopped dead... silence.
I looked over the top step to find an empty room with just a skylight
looking out into the blackness. I turned to go back down when I heard
a faint scratching noise from the window, dare I look. I walked slowly
over to the skylight, each step seemed to take an hour, dare I look.
scratch scratch. As I aproached the skylight I could make out a small
shape through the glass. To my horror it was a hand, tapping and scratching
on the glass. it was beckoning me to come nearer. As I aproached, I
could make out a face behind the hand in the mist. the face was very
pale with thin lips and deep staring eyes, it apeared to be floating
in mid air, and still beckoning. I then turned and bolted down stairs,
with the sound of banging reaching a crescendo at the base of the stairs.
As I stepped on the last stair in the hall, I stopped dead.. I could
feel someones breath on my neck, I froze, not daring to turn around
to face what was to be, then I heard a voice, I turned to look and to
my horror, there was no one there. I ran back to my bedroom and climbed
into bed under the sheets, not daring to look. I finally plucked up
enough courage to look from under the sheets.
